What is Eddoe

Eddoe, 'Ishikawa-wase, or Satoimo(scientific name: Colocasia esculenta 'Ishikawa-wase') is a non-cold tolerant perennial in the family Araceae, the genus Colocasia, and can be eaten as a root vegetable. It is called taro in contrast to yam, and it is one of the commonly sold potatoes in supermarkets. It produces pale yellow bracts with inflorescences similar to Calla in summer. It is dioecious, with yellow male flowers above the spikelets and green female flowers in a dense cluster below. The leaves are green, large, thick, water-repellent and rooted. The leaves grow in bunches of four to five nearly upright leaves. Its leaves are elongated and heart-shaped. It reproduces by planting small potatoes instead of seeds, which are produced after flowering. Yatsukashira is a variety of taro.
