Sargassum

Sargassum or hondawara (scientific name: Sargassum fulvellum) is an annual seaweed in the family Sargassaceae, native to temperate to tropical waters. It grows in groups in the intertidal zone. Its body, which can reach more than 10 ; several meters in length, consists of roots, stems and leaves, and is brownish-brown in color overall. When dried, the algae turn from brown to bright green in color. The leaves are slit and have fruit-like, oval-shaped bubbles that contain gas so that their entire body is facing upward. The sexual reproductive organs are located above the body. It is used as food and fertilizer.
