Before the leaves come out, it makes bloom purplish red flowers directly from the branches. Flower name is based on the similarity of the color dyed with the red dye "Zuou" and the flower color of this flower. The leaves are yellow green and heart shaped. The bark is taken as a traditional Chinese medicine. In the same genus Hanazu, the leaves turn red {{American Hana Ozawa}} (America Hana Suishi).
