Yachi torikabuto

Yachi torikabuto (scientific name: Aconitum nipponicum ssp. nipponicum var. nipponicum) is a perennial grass in the family Ranunculaceae endemic to Japan. It is a bird's-helmet that grows naturally in moist grasslands in subalpine to alpine areas. The grass is 50-120 cm tall with erect stems. The leaves have three deep lobes. It is a variant of the mountain aconite. The hairs on the petals cover the entire flower from various directions in the case of the mountain aconite, but in the case of the Yachi torikabuto, only hairs perpendicular to the stem grow. It is a perennial plant of the buttercup family. It grows flower stalks in summer and bears many blue-purple helmet-shaped flowers in scattered inflorescences at the tips. The whole plant is highly poisonous.
