It has well-developed rhizomes and green, thick, short, sword-shaped rhizomatous leaves that crawl horizontally. In spring, long, slender flower stalks emerge from among the leaves, and six-petaled flowers bloom at the top of the stalks. The plant is low and grows in carpet-like clusters.
