What is Suruga manyo

Suruga manyou (scientific name: Rhododendron macrosepalum cv. Surugamanyo) is a horticultural variety, a classic horticultural azalea that has been around since the Edo period. Suruga Manyo' is sometimes used as another name for the Japanese azalea 'Mochitsutsuji'. The height of the tree is 1-2 m. The leaves are lanceolate to oblong-elliptic with wavy margins. Mochitsutsuji blooms from April to May, but this azalea 'Surugamanyo' (R. macrosepalum cv. Surugamanyo) blooms slightly later, from May to June. It blooms from May to June. Since it is a type of macrosepalum, its young branches and leaves are densely covered with mucous hairs to protect them from insect damage. The petals are heavily and peach-colored with dark red spots. The color fades as the flower continues to bloom. There is one pistil and five stamens. The genus name "Rhododendron" is a compound of "Rhodo" (rose) and "dendron" (tree), the species name "macrosepalum" is a compound of "macro" (large) and "sepalum" (sepal), and the variant name "Surugamanyo" is a compound of "Suruga The variant name "Surugamanyo" means "Suruga (Suruga region)" + "manyo (Manyo = heavy petaled flower). As the species name implies, the calyx is about 2 cm long and densely covered with mucilage.
