atropurpureum

Atropurpureum , or Takane Syurosou (scientific name: Veratrum maackii var. Japonicum form. Atropurpureum) is an endemic species of Japan, and is an alpine perennial plant in the family Melanthiaceae. Native to alpine meadows north of central Honshu. Contains toxic alkaloids in the rhizome.
It is an alpine varieties of Veratrum maackii (scientific name: Veratrum maackii var. Japonicum).
It is based on the fact that an old leaf sheath resembling palm fiber remains at the base of the stem. The leaves are linear lanceolate.
The leaf width of atropurpureum (V. m. V. J. F. Atropurpureum) is as narrow as 1 to 2 cm, and the leaf width of Veratrum maackii is 3 cm or more.
The flower color of atropurpureum (V.m.v.j.f.atropurpureum) is purple-brown, while Veratrum maackii (V.m.v.j.) is dark purple brown.
