Elaeagnus rotundifolia

Elaeagnus rotundifolia (Scientific name: Elaeagnus umbellata var. rotundifolia) is a variant with rounded leaves of Elaeagnus umbellata which is a deciduous shrub in the family Elaeagnaceae. It is a coastal breed of E. umbellata and is found west of the Kanto region. The foliage is thick and dense with scaly hairs on the surface. The leaves have no serrated margins and are attached to the branches in an alternate fashion. The leaves are rounded during the flowering season and elongated by the time they bear fruit. Even though the name of the flower says autumn, it doesn't mean that it will bloom in autumn. It flowers in the spring and bears fruit in the fall. The spring flowers are small, white to light yellow, with no petals, and the flower-like shape is a calyx tube with four deep lobes at the tip and a flat opening. The fall fruit is eaten in a red spherical shape.
