Quercus myrsinaefolia, Japanese white oak, bamboo-leafedoak, or Chinese ring-cupped oak (Scientific namae: Quercus myrsinaefolia) is an evergreen broad-leaved tree in the family Fagaceae native to China, Korea, Taiwan and Japan (Honshu to Kyushu).
The Japanese name is derived from the whitish color of its wood. It is also called "kurokashi" (black oak) because of its blackish bark. The reddish wood is called akagashi (scientific name: Quercus acuta). Both are members of the family Fagaceae and are known for their hard wood. In spring, the male flowers are produced in caudate inflorescences with many yellow flowers, and the female flowers are produced in leaf axils with a few erect flowers. It produces acorns in the fall. The chestnut (scientific name: Castanea crenata) has two acorns in its shell, while the oak has only one acorn.
