Japanese red elder (Scientific name: Sambucus sieboldiana var. pinnatisecta) is a deciduous shrub in the family Adoxaceae, the genus Sambucus, native to Japan, the Korean Peninsula and China. It is native to the mountains and fields of Hokkaido to Kyushu. The entire tree has been planted in gardens since ancient times because of its useful components. The young leaves and buds are used for food, the wood for crafts, the fruit for fruit wine, the dried branches and leaves for herbal medicines, the bark and wood for bathing, and the pith for specimens in experiments and to ward off evil spirits.
