Blackberry (Empetrum nigrum L. var. japonicum) is a subalpine evergreen creeping shrub of the family Ericaceae, native to China, Korea and Japan.
In Japan, it grows wild on subalpine ridges and rocky areas from Hokkaido to northern Honshu. It grows to a height of 20-50 cm, rarely reaching 1 m. Its twigs are reddish-brown and well branched and crawl on the ground. Small dark purple three-petaled flowers bloom in the leaf axils in late spring to early summer. The black, spherical fruits in the autumn are sweet and edible and can be used for medicinal purposes.
