dracaena draco

Dracaena draco or the dragon's blood tree (dracaena draco) is a subtropical tree of the family Asparagaceae, native to Macaronesia. It is native to dry, semi-desert regions. The tree stands upright, but after a decade or so it branches in many pieces at the top and bottom to form a mushroom-like shape. The bark is light brown and uneven. The leaves are flat and cortical, blue-green, sword-shaped and clustered at the ends of branches, with large conical inflorescences that grow from the tips of the branches in June, producing many small, whitish-green flowers. The flowers are followed by many small, round, orange fruits. Its name comes from the fact that red sap is released when the trunk is injured, and the genus name 'Dracaena' means 'δράκαινα' (female dragon) in Greek. The dried red sap is used in Chinese medicine.
