Lilium japonicum

Lilium japonicum or the sasa-yuri (scientific name: Lilium japonicum) is a perennial bulbous plant of the lily family, Liliaceae, native to Japan. It grows wild in low mountainous areas of central Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu, in rather light forests and grasslands. The plant is 30-90 cm tall. The bulbs are 4 cm in diameter, ovoid, whitish, and edible. The leaves are 8-15 cm long, lanceolate, and fewer in number than other lilies, with 12-15 alternate leaves on the top of the stem. In June or July, early among lilies, it produces large, 10-15 cm long, pale pink to white, funnel-shaped flowers, one to three per stem, which bloom horizontally. The corolla is composed of six short, 10-14 cm long petioles. There are six stamens, and the anthers and pollen are conspicuously reddish brown with a strong fragrance. The floral threads are green. The flowers are followed by a capsule. The flower is named for its leaves, which are very similar to those of the bamboo grass, a member of the lily family. The language of flowers is "elegant" and "rare. The lilies mentioned in the Manyoshu (Japan's oldest anthology of poetry) are considered to be the mountain lily, the sasa lily, and the himeyuri.
