Lamb's Quarters

Lamb's Quarters (scientific name: Chenopodium album var. centrorubrum) is an annual herbaceous wildflower of the genus Acanthaceae, native to Europe. It is distributed in wilderness areas all over the world. In Japan, it is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu and Okinawa. The stem is upright and branched at the top. The stems turn woody in autumn and make excellent canes. The shoots are covered with red powdery grains, which is why they are called redwood. The leaves are rhombus-shaped, with larger leaves at the bottom. In autumn, small yellow-green flowers bloom from the leaf axils and branch tips as the inflorescence grows. It is a wind-borne flower and its pollen is scattered and causes allergy.
Similarly, the white shoots are called white lamb's feathers (scientific name: Chenopodium album).
There is a genus of quinoa (kinuwa, scientific name: Chenopodium quinoa) in the same genus.
