What is Fugenzo cherry

Birth flowers for Apr 11

Fugenzo cherry (scientific name: Prunus lannesiana 'Alborosea') is a Japanese horticultural species, a deciduous broad-leaved shrub in the genus Cerasus of the family Rosaceae. The shape of the tree is umbrella-shaped. It is a double-flowered variety of the satozakura (Satozakura) cherry tree of the Oshima-zakura family.
The flowers are double-petaled, white on the inside and pink on the outside, but as they bloom, the pink inside turns to white and the entire tree looks whitish. The young leaves are rust-colored and open at the same time as blooming, then green up and turn red in autumn.

One of the representative varieties of double-flowered cherry trees

After the single, light pink Someiyoshino (Somei Yoshino, scientific name: Cerasus ×yedoensis cv. yedoensis) finishes blooming, it produces large, double-petaled, light red flowers. Together with Prunus 'Kanzan' (Scientific name: Prunus lannesiana cv. Sekiyama) i, which has dark peach blossoms, it is a representative of the double-flowered cherry tree. Not only does it have many petals, but it also produces many flowers in bunches, which causes the branches to droop under the weight of the blossoms. A similar cherry tree is Ichiyou (Ichiyo).

Origin of the flower name 'fugenzo'

The two pistils in the center of the white petals turn into leaves, and their curved tips are said to resemble the nose (or tusks) of an elephant ridden by Fugen Bosatsu (Fugen Bodhisattva). However, not all of the petals have pistils that turn into leaves.
