Phragmites australis, common reed or Yoshi (Scientific name: Phragmites australis) is a temperate to tropical region of the whole world, it is a perennial plant belonging to the family Polygonaceae. In Japan, it grows naturally in wetlands such as tidal flats and lakes in Hokkaido to Kyushu. Rhizomes grow and form large communities in swamps and so on. Another name is also called Ashi (reed). It is a habitat for snails, crabs and small fish, and it can be seen waterfowl. It is harvested and dried and used for shading such as Yoshizu.
