What is Allium Giganteum
Allium cristophii (scientific name: Allium cristophii) is a perennial (bulbous) plant of the genus Allium in the Amaryllidaceae family.
In English, it is called Persian onion, Star of Persia, Stars of Persia, or Ornamental onion.
Its native habitat includes Iran, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and the eastern Mediterranean region, where it grows naturally in arid areas.
It reaches a height of 40–60 cm.
The leaves are lanceolate and grayish-green in color.
From May to June, it extends an umbel inflorescence from the tip of the flower stalk, producing a spherical inflorescence 20–25 cm in diameter. This is made up of about 100 star-shaped flowers, each around 1 cm in diameter, with a metallic light purplish-red color.
It is used for ornamental purposes in gardens and as cut flowers.
As a member of the onion family, it is toxic to pets.
