Oncidium (Oncidium hybrids) is an evergreen perennial epiphytic orchid of the genus Oncidium in the family Orchidaceae, native to Central and South America. It is also known by Japanese names meaning "Flock of Sparrows Orchid" (Muresuzume-ran) or "Sparrow Orchid," and English names such as Dancing-lady orchid, Butterfly orchid, and Golden shower orchid. The plant height ranges from 20 to 150 cm. It blooms many bright yellow, butterfly-shaped flowers on long, slender stems. Many horticultural varieties have been bred, and the flower colors are abundant.
Origin of the Name The Japanese name "Muresuzume-ran" (Flock of Sparrows Orchid) comes from the fact that the flowers look like a flock of sparrows gathering together. In English, it is named "Dancing-lady orchid" because the flower shape resembles a dancer (such as a hula or flamenco dancer) full of vitality. It is called "Butterfly orchid" because the butterfly-shaped flowers bloom in a shower-like cascade, and "Golden shower orchid" for the same reason regarding its yellow flowers. In the representative variety "Aloha Iwanaga," each small flower looks like it is wearing a yellow long dress with a red vest. The genus name "Oncidium" is derived from the Greek word "onkos" (swelling/mass), referring to the swelling at the base of the lip.
