What is Apoi balloon flower
Apoi Balloon flower or Apoi Kikyo (scientific name: Platycodon grandiflorus) is a dwarf variety of Platycodon grandiflorus native to Mount Apoi in Hokkaido.
The scientific name is the same as that of Platycodon grandiflorus, the variety is the same, the flower diameter is the same (3 to 5 cm), and the height of the plant is 5 to 20 cm, which is lower than that of the common bellflower.
The plants grow in harsh areas exposed to strong winds, so they are kept short to prevent breakage, and the soil is poor in nutrients, so they do not grow taller.
The common bellflower (Platycodon grandiflorus), by the way, grows to 50-100 cm in height.
