What is Tricyrtis flave

Tricyrtis flave ,the yellow-flowered toad lily, or the kibana-no-hototogisu (scientific name: Tricyrtis flave), endemic to Japan, is a perennial herb in the genus Tricyrtis (Liliaceae). It is endemic to Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu and grows wild on slopes along valleys.

The plant is 20 to 50 cm tall. The stems are sparsely covered with stiff open hairs. The leaves are 8-20 cm long, green, oblong-lanceolate, and alternate on the stem. The leaf surface is darkly mottled.

From September to November, a brown-haired, 2-6 cm long petiole emerges from the leaf axils, and one or two flowers bloom upwards. The petals are cup-shaped with six petioles and open flat. The yellow flowers are 4 to 6 cm in diameter with scattered purple dots and a yellow ring around the base. There are six stamens with an anthers facing outward with the floral threads recurving at the top along the floral column. The pistil of the pistil divides into three parts and further divides into two parts. The flower is followed by a capsule. It is listed as an endangered species (VU).
