It is an evergreen shrub in the family Aquifoliaceae, with white four-petaled flowers in early summer to summer. The leaves are small, oval, shiny green, cortical, fleshy and turned back. Its name comes from the pea-sized leaves of the Japanese boxwood tree. The green fruit forms after the flowers and ripens to black in autumn.
