What is Schizanthus

Schizanthus , commonly called as butterfly flower or poor-man's orchid (Scientific name: Schizanthus × wisetonensis) is an interspecific hybrid of Schizanthus, an annual or biennial herbaceous plant native to the Andes Mountains of Chile and Argentina. In Chile, 10 to 15 species of Schizanthus are endemic to the Yerba Loca Nature Sanctuary, a protected area in the Santiago metropolitan area. The grasses are up to 60 cm tall and the stems are well branched. Leaves are pinnate and attached in alternate arrangements. The flowers in this plant come in a wide variety of colors: red, pink, purple, orange, yellow and white. It has a yellow or white patch at the base of the corolla that looks like a butterfly or moth. The stems are thin and bend easily, so they prefer shorter grasses. It is not able to survive the Japanese rainy season, since the species is from an arid region. It is distributed as an early spring flower in pots.
