What is Abies mariesii
The Abies mariesii (scientific name: Abies mariesii) is a species endemic to Japan and an evergreen conifer belonging to the genus Abies in the pine family.
It is also known as the Aomori fir (Aomori Todomatsu).
It grows wild in the subalpine zones of the Tohoku and Chubu regions.
It can reach a height of 30 meters, and its young branches are densely covered with brownish-red hairs.
The needles are densely arranged on the branches, with rounded or slightly concave tips. The undersides of the needles are white.
The cones are 7–10 cm long, dark purple in color, and hang upward.
Similar trees include the Shirabiso (Abies veitchii) and the Todomatsu (Abies sachalinensis).
The Todomatsu is found in Hokkaido.
The Shirabiso is a species endemic to Japan and grows wild on Honshu and Shikoku. Its leaf tips are deeply bifid, and its cones are small (4–7 cm).
