What is Mongoru Nogiku
Mongoru Nogiku (Mongolian Aster)
Mongoru Nogiku (Mongolian Aster, scientific name: Aster sp., horticultural cultivar group) is a member of the family Asteraceae, genus Aster. In Japan, it is introduced under the name “Mongolian Aster” at horticultural exhibitions.
However, the plants currently in cultivation differ in leaf morphology from the wild species Aster altaicus (Altai Aster), and their exact taxonomic status remains uncertain.
Therefore, in botanical gardens and exhibitions, it is often labeled as “Aster sp. (details unknown),” and the precise scientific name has not yet been established.
The cultivated form (commonly distributed) has white to pale purple ray florets with yellow disc florets. The growth habit is somewhat prostrate, and the leaves are broadly elliptic.
The plant grows to a height of about 20–30 cm, spreading horizontally. The leaves are broadly elliptic, glossy, and somewhat thick in texture. The flowering period is from August to November, producing white to pale purple ray florets.
