It has a blackish surface and a grayish back.
The trees are artificially planted on the logs that have been cut down.
It is used as a Chinese ingredient and has no taste, but is preferred for its chewiness.
There are also white kikurage mushrooms, which are used for desserts and other purposes.
One of the southern species of kikurage is the Aragonia polytricha).
