Bombax ceiba , red cotton tree or tsilk cotton tree (scientific name: Bombax ceiba) is a deciduous tree native to India, Southeast Asia, and Australia.
It is called "red cotton tree" because of its red flowers, and "silk cotton tree" because the fruits yield white cotton. The upright tree has many thorns and grows to a height of 20 to 30 meters. The five-petaled red camellia-like flowers bloom from January to February, earlier than the leaves open. The leaves are palmately compound with 5 to 7 leaflets. The fruit is a spindle-shaped capsule 20 to 30 cm long. The fruit is green and turns brown when ripe, with black and white hairs inside. The hairs on the seed are used to make cotton. The tree is used as a garden tree, the wood is used for crafts, and the stamen is dried and used in a soup called "nam niao.
