What is Lilium leichtlinii
Lilium leichtlinii (Ko-oni-yuri, Small Tiger Lily)
Lilium leichtlinii, commonly known as Ko-oni-yuri ("Small Tiger Lily"), is a hardy perennial bulbous plant of the genus Lilium in the family Liliaceae, native to Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and China.
In English, it is called Maximowicz's lily.
It grows naturally in grasslands and wetlands of lowlands throughout Japan.
The plant reaches 70–150 cm in height, with slender and erect stems.
The leaves are green, lanceolate, up to 15 cm long, and arranged alternately.
From July to September, racemes emerge from the flowering stem, bearing downward-facing, funnel-shaped flowers 10–15 cm in diameter.
The flowers are orange-red with numerous dark brown spots, resembling those of the Tiger Lily (Lilium lancifolium).
The tepals, 6–8 cm long, strongly curve backward, similar to L. lancifolium.
The fruit is a capsule, elliptical in shape.
The white bulb (edible lily root) can be eaten, just like those of L. lancifolium and L. auratum (the Golden-rayed lily).
Differences between Ko-oni-yuri and O-oni-yuri (Tiger Lily)
Ko-oni-yuri is native to Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and China, and grows 0.7–1.5 m tall.
O-oni-yuri (Tiger Lily) is native to Japan and is larger, reaching 1–2 m.
O-oni-yuri produces bulbils (axillary bulbils) in the leaf axils, whereas Ko-oni-yuri does not; it reproduces by seeds.
The lily roots of O-oni-yuri, Ko-oni-yuri, and Yamayuri (Lilium auratum) are edible.
Ko-oni-yuri (Lilium leichtlinii): Habit and stem (no axillary bulbils)
Oni-yuri (Lilium lancifolium, Tiger Lily): Habit and stem (with axillary bulbils)
