What is Purple Crowddipper

Purple Crowddipper (scientific name: Pinellia ternata f. atropurpurea) is a variety of crow's-pear (Pinellia ternata). It is a wild perennial herb of the genus Pinellia of the family Araceae that grows wild in fields, and in open fields from Japan to China. It looks almost the same as Pinellia ternata, except that the inside of the flame bracts (large bracts covering the inflorescence) is dark purple.

In Japan, it is a wild herb of 30-40 cm in height that grows wild in fields and open spaces from Hokkaido to Kyushu. The underground tuber is spherical, 1-2 cm in diameter, and the dried tuber, without the cork layer, is used to make a herbal medicine called hange. The tuber produces 1 to 3 long rhizomatous leaves 10 to 20 cm long. Small leaf buds (3-5 mm in diameter) are attached to the center of the petiole and at the base of the lobes. The leaves are composed of 4 lobes. In summer, it produces flower stalks, and at the tip of each stalk is a fleshy inflorescence surrounded by a ladle-shaped bract with a greenish outer surface and a "dark purple" inner surface. The genus name "Pinellia" is a dedication to the Italian botanist Dr. G. V. Pinelli, and the species name "ternata" means "three in number" in Latin. The variant name "atropurpurea" is a compound of the Latin words "atro" (dark) and "purpurea" (purple), meaning "dark purple.
