What is Zamioculcas
Zamioculcas(Zamioculcas zamiifolia) is a drought-tolerant perennial herbaceous plant and houseplant native to Eastern Africa. It belongs to the genus Zamioculcas in the Araceae (Aroid) family and is the only species in the genus Zamioculcas. It is cultivated for its attractive foliage.
It is also known by its Japanese alias, Sotetsuba-kaiu (苏铁叶海芋, meaning Cycad-leaf Calla Lily), as well as Zanzibar Gem, and ZZ Plant. In its native habitat, it grows naturally in tropical rainforests.
The plant reaches a height of 45–120 cm (1.5–4 ft) and has a succulent, short rhizome underground.
The leaves are dark green, pinnately compound, measuring 40–60 cm (16–24 in) long, with 6–8 pairs of thick, glossy, elliptical leaflets.
The leaves are known to store water, with the leaves holding 91% and the petioles holding 95% water.
In September–October, it produces a spadix inflorescence that is pale yellow or brown, 5–7 cm (2–3 in) long, and enclosed by a yellow-green spathe.
The entire plant is poisonous due to containing calcium oxalate, but it is valued as an ornamental plant for its beautiful foliage.
Origin of the Name
Genus Name Origin: The genus name "Zamioculcas" is a compound term derived from "Zamio" (referencing the leaf shape's similarity to Zamia, a genus of cycads) and "culcas" (referencing its relation to the Araceae genus Colocasia and an ancient Middle Eastern name).
Species Epithet Origin: The specific epithet "zamiifolia" is a compound word meaning "Zamia-like" + "folia (leaf)," literally meaning "with Zamia-like leaves."
