Calystegia japonica , Japanese bindweed, or Hirugao (scientific name: Calystegia japonica) is a wild perennial wildflower of the family Convolvulaceae native to Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia. It is intertwined with the roadsides and fences of every corner of Japan. In summer, it has a funnel-shaped pink flower similar to Morning glory (Asagao , scientific name: Ipomoea nil) , but is a different genus of the same family. Morning glory (I. nil) is a dwarf annual of the genus Ipomoea and has many variations of color. However morning glory (I. nil) is only this one color. In addition, it can produce seeds in Asagao (I. nil), but it can not produce seeds in convolvulus, and breeding is done with a rhizome. While morning glory (I. nil) blooms early in the morning and withers in the morning, Asagao (I. nil) also blooms in the daytime. The leaves are in the form of Asagao (I. nil), while the morning glory (I. nil) is in the shape of a jade. The leaves grow on each other. In the same Calystegia genus, there is a False bindweed (Ko-hirugao, scientific name: Calystegia hederacea). False bindweed(C. hederacea) has small flowers (flower diameter: 3 to 4 cm), protrusions on the stem, small leaves, and two side lines. In the flowering season, Hirugao (C. japonica) blooms from June to August, while Ko-hirugao (C. hederacea) bloom from May to August, so it lasts as long as one month.
