Encephalartos transvenosus or Modjadji cycad (scientific name: Encephalartos transvenosus) is an evergreen tall tree in the family Cycadaceae, native to Africa. It is a species of onyx that is believed to have survived the ice age. Long plumageous double leaves are attached to the circumference of the stem apex. Breeding is done by seed. The inflorescence is dioecious and cone-shaped. The male flowers are yellow egg-shaped with one to four cones, 30 to 40 cm long and 13 to 15 cm in diameter. The female flowers are 1 to 4 cones, yellow egg-shaped, 50 to 80 cm long, 13 to 15 cm in diameter, and weigh 40 Kg. It blooms in late summer. Seeds are ovate, 4-5 cm long and 2-2.7 cm in diameter, with a red cone.
