What is Brassica cernua

Brassica cernua or karashina (scientific name: Brassica juncea var. cernua) is an annual to overwintering vegetable of the Brassicaceae family native to Central Asia. It is a cruciferous variant with deeply incised leaves. In spring, it produces yellow, four-petaled flowers with a common inflorescence.
The leaves are green or purple in color and, along with the stems, are edible and have a tangy taste. Uses include fresh salads, pickling, soaking, sautéing, frying, and miso soup. There are many varieties, including the green leafed "Rias mustard greens" and the purple-red "red mustard greens". The seeds, which form after flowering, are small and yellowish-brown in color and can be used to make hot peppers.
