What is Needlebush
Hakea sericea (scientific name: Hakea sericea) is a species endemic to eastern Australia. It is a thorny, frost-hardy evergreen shrub belonging to the genus Hakea in the family Myrtaceae.
It is also known by the common names Needlebush, Silky Hakea, Bush Needlewood, Silver Hakea, and Spiny Hakea.
It grows to a height of 1–5 m and spreads out laterally to form a thicket.
It is considered an invasive alien species in many countries, particularly South Africa, New Zealand, and Portugal.
Origin of the flower name
The genus name “Hakea” is named in honor of Baron Christian Ludwig von Hake (1745–1818), a patron of 18th-century botanical projects.
The specific epithet “sericea” means “silky” and refers to the fine hairs found on young shoots.
