What is Zea mays subsp. mexicana

Zea mays subsp. Mexicana or Teosinte (Scientific name: Zea mays subsp. Mexicana) is a unique species of Mexico, an annual grass of the genus Teosinte of the grass family. It is a kind of cereals which is regarded as the origin of {{maize}}. As with maize, male flowers at the stem tip and female flowers at the leaf axil beneath it will bloom. A pollinated female flower consists of ten number of fruits covered with hard shell but it is not edible. It is called useless corn, which is not a pleasant but corn (pig millet). However, DNA research reveals the presence of genes with strong moisture resistance, which are not found in corn, and is expected to be usefully utilized.
