What is Angulocaste

Anguloa uniflora is a perennial geophytic orchid of the genus Anguloa in the orchid family, native to central Peru. In its native habitat, it grows wild on subalpine to alpine tree floors at altitudes between 1400 and 2500 m. At the base of a 20-cm ovate pseudoscaly stem, there is an inflorescence of 40 to 80 cm tall grass and three large, lanceolate, dark green leaves. The flowers have a minty fragrance and are long-lasting, blooming for two to three weeks.

Origin of flower name

The other name "swaddled babies orchid" comes from the fact that this orchid resembles a baby wrapped in a blanket inside its peach-colored tulip-like petals. The genus name "Anguloa" is a dedication to the Spanish writer and plant collector Francisco de Angulo. The species name "uniflora" is a compound of the Latin words "one" (unus) and "flora" (flora), referring to the fact that "one flower" is produced on one flower axis.
