Cirsium nipponicum is a perennial plant of the thistle family Asteraceae and is native to Japan. This plant grows wild in the mountains and fields of the southern part of Iwate Prefecture. When flowers are in bloom, there are no root leaves, but elliptically lanceolate stems and leaves. It produces small purple head flowers on the stem tip. The genus name 'Cirsium' is derived from the Greek word 'kirsos'.
