What is Mishoukan

Mishoukan (Botanical name: Citrus kawachiensis) is a citrus fruit in the genus Citrus of the Rutaceae family, discovered in Kawachi, Japan.
It is also known by various names and trademarks such as "Japanese grapefruit," "Juicy Fruit" (Kumamoto), "Mishoukan," "Uwa Gold," "Ainan Gold" (Ehime), and "Kawachi Bankan."

It is cultivated mainly in warm regions such as Kumamoto, Ehime, and Wakayama prefectures.

The tree grows to about 3 meters in height.
It blooms in May, and the fruit is harvested from March to May. After being stored at low temperatures, it is sold from April onwards, or alternatively, it may remain on the tree until around April before shipment.

Although it resembles grapefruit, Mishoukan has less bitterness and acidity. It is known for its refreshing aroma and juiciness.

The Japanese name "Kawachi Bankan" comes from its place of discovery (Kawachi) and the fact that it ripens later in the season ("Bankan" means late-ripening citrus).
