Lithospermum erythrorhizon ,(Scientific name: Lithospermum erythrorhizon), is an evergreen perennial herb of the family Boraginaceae, native to Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China. It grows wild in mountainous grasslands in Hokkaido, Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. The erect stems are branched at the top. It produces small white funnel-shaped flowers between bracts in the leaf axils at the stem tips in summer. The flowers have a five-lobed tip. The dark purple roots are used to make the crude drug and as a purple dye.
