What is Parmentiera cereifera

Parmentiera cereifera or as commonly called 'candle tree' (scientific name: Parmentiera cereifera) is an evergreen shrub of the family Bignoniaceae , endemic to Panama. The tree is 6-7 meters tall and its bark is light grayish brown in color. The leaves are green and three times compound, with wings on the petiole. The lobes are ovate and arranged in opposite pairs. Flowering season is October-November, and the flowers are stem-emergent, blooming directly from the trunk at night. The flowers are white to light green, funnel-shaped, 7 cm long and 5 cm in diameter, with five lobes at the tips of the petals. The diameter is about 5 cm. The fruit that follows the flower is a capsule with a waxy surface. The fruits are 3 cm in diameter and 30-100 cm long, and turn yellow when ripe. The cylindrical fruits resemble candles and have an apple aroma.
