What is Genkai tsutsuji

Genkai tsutsuji or Genkai azalea (scientific name: Rhododendron mucronulatum var. ciliatum) is a deciduous broad-leaved shrub in the family Ericaceaee and native to Korea, China, Mongolia and Japan. In Japan, it grows wild on cliffs and gravelly areas in the region centered on the Genkai Sea, hence its Japanese name. It is also called Tokiwa-tsutsuji or Tsukiwa-genkai. It is a variety of Karamurasaki tsutsuji or Karamurasaki azalea (scientific name: Rhododendron mucronulatum var. mucronulatum), but it is sometimes not specifically distinguished. The tree is 2-4 m tall with slender branches. The leaves are elliptic, rough-haired on both sides, alternate, and grow in bunches at the ends of branches. The leaves turn from green to red in autumn. It is an early bloomer among azaleas, flowering from mid-March to mid-April before the leaves develop. The corolla is about 5 cm in diameter and funnel-shaped with five deep lobes at the tip. Petals are round. Flower color is peach or white. One to several flower buds are clustered at the tips of branches, and one flower is produced from each bud. It is used as a garden tree, park tree, and cut branch. The double-flowered "Hikarugenji" is a garden variety.
