What is Rose 'Radio times'
The birth flowers for October 16th are Moss Rose (Rosa centifolia 'muscosa') and Tartarian Aster (Aster tataricus).
Moss Rose (Scientific name: Rosa centifolia 'muscosa') is a cultivar developed by a Dutch breeder through crossing and improving the naturally occurring, single-flowering variety, 'Rosa centifolia,' (which mutated from an unknown wild rose species in 1769) with various other roses. It is characterized by having its sepals and buds covered with thorns (glandular hairs/resinous bristles), and many subsequent Moss Rose varieties have originated from this plant.
First, Rosa centifolia is a beautiful Old Rose known by the alternate names Centifolia Rose or Cabbage Rose. The famous portrait of Marie Antoinette (1755–1793) holding this rose, painted by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun (1755–1842) in 1783, is well-known. Unfortunately, the original Rosa centifolia was unable to reproduce because all its stamens had been completely petalized (turned into petals), preventing pollination.
The development of this Moss Rose from a miraculously preserved Rosa centifolia variety that still possessed stamens allowed for successful propagation and the creation of subsequent descendants.
This is because the cilia (fine hairs) growing on the buds and sepals resemble moss. When the leaves or stems are rubbed, the sticky resin emits a very spicy fragrance.
The beautiful, multi-layered petals possess a rich, sweet aroma.
The essential oil "Rose Absolute" is derived from this rose, providing both a classic rose scent and relaxing effects.
The Basis for the Name
Japanese Name Origin: The Japanese name "Koke-bara (苔薔薇, Moss Rose)" means a rose whose branches, buds, and sepals are covered in fine hairs that look like moss.
Alternate Name Origin: The alternate name "Cabbage Rose" comes from the way the layered petals resemble a cabbage.
