What is Schizophragma hydrangeoides

Schizophragma hydrangeoides or iwagarami (Schizophragma hydrangeoides) is a deciduous vine native to Japan and the Korean Peninsula. It is also known as Yukikazura (snow vine) or Japanese hydrangea vine in English. In Japan, it is distributed from Hokkaido to Kyushu in mountainous areas at forest margins and rocky areas. The vine grows 10 to 15 meters long by extending aerial roots from the trunk and branches and twining itself around large rocks and trees. It has long petioles, and its leaves are 5-15 cm long and 5-10 cm wide with ovate acuminate leaflets with serrated edges. The young shoots are used as a rescue plant and are edible.

Origin of Japanese name
The name comes from the aerial roots that emerge from the trunk and branches and grow entangled in large rocks and trees.

Characteristics
It has only one white calyx (ornamental flower) and large, round leaves with serrated edges.
