What is Kibushi

Kibushi or Stachyurus praecox (scientific name: Stachyurus praecox) is native to Japan and is a cold-resistant deciduous shrub of the family Stachyuraceae. In winter, a thin string-like flower bud is drooped on the long branch tip to prepare for the flowering time of spring. Flowers bloom earlier than leaves like Somei Yoshino. It is a typical tree flower telling early spring. Pale pink or pale yellow bell-shaped florets are made to bloom from the branches like grapes. A lot of flowers are attached to a thin branch spreading long in the side. Flowers start to bloom from the small flowers above. Male and female heterozygous male have more flowers than female, but fruits do not tie. Female stock has fruit after flower and black dye can be collected. This dye was used as a substitute for Fushi, and it was used for the tooth black of an old married woman. It is derived from the name Kibushi. By the way, Goshiko is Cobb which can be made by insects parasitizing on the tree called Nurdee with an insect bites. The ingredient "tannin" contained therein is used as a black dye. In the same genus Kiboshi, There is Hachijo Kibushi which inflorescences and leaves are larger than Kiboshi .
