What is Somei yoshino

Birth flowers for Mar 28, Apr 9

Someiyoshino (Somei Yoshino, scientific name: Cerasus ×yedoensis cv. yedoensis) is a representative variety of "Sakura ,cherry blossom(scientific name: Cerasus L.)" a deciduous tall tree belonging to the cherry family Rosaceae that represents spring in Japan. In Japan, where there is no national flower, it follows the national flower. The blooming of the cherry tree is observed at weather stations throughout Japan, signaling the arrival of spring. Somei-Yoshino is a hybrid of Oshima-zakura (scientific name: Cerasus speciosa) ' and 'Edohigan(Cerasus itosakura f. ascendens)', and was spread throughout Japan from Somei (now Komagome) in Tokyo in the early Meiji period. The bark is black. In April, before the leaves come out, four to five light pink five-petaled flowers are borne in bunches on diffuse inflorescences extending from the branches. The flowers bloom en masse in the absence of leaves, and their flamboyant and gentle colors suit people's tastes, and hanami (cherry blossom viewing) events are held throughout Japan. The flowers also fall at once, and are popular for their good dispersal. It is called "sakura fubuki" (cherry blossom snowstorm). The autumn leaves are also beautiful in fall. However, due to its susceptibility to the "witch's broom", it has been giving up its position to the later-emerging "'Jindai-akebono(Prunus x yedoensis 'Jindai-akebono') and "Komatsu-otome(Cerasus spachiana cv. Komatsu-otome)". The language of flowers is "purity" and "outstanding beauty.
