What is Alcantarea imperialis 'Silver Plum'
Alcantarea imperialis 'Silver Plum' (scientific name: Alcantarea imperialis 'Silver Plum') is a large, evergreen perennial plant cultivar of Alcantarea imperialis, which is endemic to Brazil and belongs to the genus Alcantarea in the Bromeliaceae (Pineapple family).
It is also known by common names such as "Imperial Bromeliad" or "Mikado Bromeliad."
The wild species naturally grows on rocky slopes in the Serra dos Órgãos mountains of Brazil.
The plant reaches a height and width of 1–1.5 meters. Although its growth is slow, it becomes quite large.
Its leathery and glossy leaves form a rosette. The upper surface of the long-elliptical leaves is silvery green, while the underside is deep reddish-purple.
It rarely blooms, but when it does, the inflorescence can reach 3 meters in height and bears small flowers in yellow, red, and orange. The flowering period lasts for about one year, after which the plant dies.
