What is Spinach

Spinach (scientific name: Spinacia oleracea L.) is annual vegetables in the family Amaranthaceae native to Central and Western Asia. Long day plant. It is dioecious and blooms from spring to early summer. Male flowers have a flower diameter of 0.2cm and many spikes are attached to the shoot apex of the male plant. Female flowers are 0.5 cm in diameter and a few are attached to the axils of female plants. It is a wind carrier that performs pollination activity by wind. It can be eaten as a leafy vegetable. From Persia (Arab), it was introduced to China and Japan during the Edo period, and is now edible on a daily basis. There are Eastern and Western varieties, as well as first-generation hybrids that cross them. Currently, the first-generation hybrids that are excellent in properties occupy the market. There are sword-leaf type and round-leaf type in the first generation hybrid. The sword-leaf leaves are triangular and have cuts at the base of the leaves. Round leaves are broad oval and have no cuts. It is a green-yellow vegetable, rich in vitamins A, C, E, minerals, beta-carotene, folic acid, and lutein.
