Yamazakura ,or Prunus jamasakura (scientific name: Cerasus jamasakura) is a species of deciduous tall "cherry" tree native to Japan and belonging to the cherry family Rosaceae, and grows wild in the wilds of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The bark and young leaves are reddish. It is an early blooming cherry tree with many single white flowers, and blooms in spring before the Someiyoshino and other garden varieties bloom. While other varieties produce leaves after blooming, this species produces leaves at the same time as blooming. It is also known as the "leaf cherry.

Many garden varieties have been created from this species, and Someiyoshino is one of them. Before the Someiyoshino was born, this species was the object of hanami (flower viewing).
