Corylopsis spicata

Corylopsis spicata, Winter hazel, or tosa mizuki, (scientific name: Corylopsis spicata) is a deciduous shrub native to Japan and belongs to the family Hamamelidaceae. It blooms in spring with small, pale yellow, five-petaled flowers hanging down in spikes before the leaves emerge. Japanese name comes from the fact that the leaves resemble those of the mizuki. It is used for bonsai, park trees and garden trees. A similar tree is Hyuga mizuki (scientific name: Corylopsis pauciflora). It is taller than C. spicata (Tosa Mizuki). Tosa Mizuki (C. spicata) grows to about 4 m, while Hyuga Mizuki (C. pauciflora) grows to about 2 m.
