What is Allium kiiense
Allium kiiense or Kii ito-rakkyo (scientific name: Allium kiiense) is a perennial bulb plant native to Japan, belonging to the genus Allium of the family Amaryllidaceae. It grows wild in brightly lit places on rocks and in crevices between rocks on riverbanks in the Kii Peninsula (Wakayama and Mie prefectures), Gifu, Yamaguchi, and Aichi prefectures in Japan. It is similar to, but smaller than, the rakkyo. It has long oval scales about 2 cm long underground. The rhizomatous leaves are slender and hollow like threads, and there are no stem leaves. 10 to 15 small, six-petaled, dark reddish-purple flowers are produced laterally from October to November in a diffuse inflorescence extending from the top of the stem. The pistils and stamens are two or three times longer than the corolla and protrude. After the flowers, capsule fruits are produced. Unfortunately, it is listed as an endangered species in the Ministry of the Environment's Red Data.
