Somei Nioi

Somei-nioi (scientific name: Cerasus × yedoensis 'Somei-nioi', Cerasus Sato-zakura 'Someinioi') is a horticultural variety cultivated by Kaname Takenaka of the National Institute of Genetics in 1965 from a seedling of Somei-yoshino ( It is a horticultural variety bred by Kaname Takenaka of the National Institute of Genetics in 1965 from a seedling of Cerasus × yedoensis 'Somei-yoshino' in Oshima Park in the town of Izu-Oshima. It is classified in the C. Sato-zakura Group and emits an aromatic fragrance when it blooms. The core of the flower turns red when it falls. The genus name "Cerasus" means "cherry blossom" in Latin, and "yedoensi" means "Edo's".

Incidentally, Someiyoshino (Somei Yoshino, scientific name: Cerasus × yedoensis) is related to Oshima-zakura (Oshima cherry, scientific name: Cerasus speciosa or P. lannesiana var. speciosa) and Edo Higan (Edohigan, scientific name: Cerasus spachiana, (scientific name: Cerasus spachiana, or Cerasus itosakura).
